The welcome video from Tenri Schools Embu had barely finished circulating when the warning arrived. Pupils in uniform danced on camera on October 6, 2026, to announce that Priscilla Wanjiku Karanja, the Grade teacher Kenya knows as Teacher Cillah, was joining their school.
Online, people who claim to know the institution answered with a colder line. Do not celebrate the transfer until you know when the salary lands.
The clip, shows learners treating the move as a coup. One pupil calls it good news, then adds that she herself is about to leave. The video travelled because Cillah already travels.
She is the Westlands Primary School teacher who in August turned a public flirtation with President William Ruto’s son George Ruto into a national sideshow, met him at her Nairobi school on August 26, and has been watched move by move since.

A private-school transfer to Embu was always going to draw a crowd. The crowd did not expect the reception in the comments.
One message to Nyakundi was blunt. It told Cillah that Tenri was not the opportunity it appeared to be, that October’s salary would come in December, and that institutions under Tenri were, in the writer’s view, poor employers. “Cillah will regret this move. Atapata taabu sana,” it said.
A second note on X was shorter: “Huyo Odijo hataamini. Salo ya Oct atapata Dec.” A third named the man said to run the place. James Kariuki, described as principal, was called unprofessional and rude.
The complainant claimed Cillah would be told to lock her phone, that the attention she now controls would be soaked up, and that her posts would be watched and, if necessary, ordered deleted.

In November 2023, TV47 filmed teachers at Tenri Primary School in Embu failing to download KCPE results and identified the head teacher on camera as James Kariuki.
The school’s public face is calmer. Tenri presents itself as a mixed day and boarding institution on the Embu–Kiritiri Road, begun in 1999 as a kindergarten and since expanded through pre-primary, primary and junior school under the Kenya Tenri Mission, with Japanese language and culture on the timetable. The prospectus does not say when staff are paid.
For Cillah, the money question is not abstract. In May she sat with a piece of paper and did the sum that made her famous for something other than George Ruto.
About KSh 30,000 a month, she calculated, worked out to roughly KSh 2 a minute across an eight-hour day. She laughed, said she felt short-changed, and told critics not to attack teachers who take side work to survive.
By August she was already talking, carefully, about greener pastures. Under that post, one follower wrote that Tenri School wanted her. Another warned that greener pastures have snakes.
Private schools live on the gap between the brochure and the payroll.
Parents pay for uniforms, Japanese lessons and a boarding wing. Teachers are still employees under the Employment Act, owed their wages when they fall due. Embu has heard versions of this before.
Teachers hired by boards and parents’ associations across the county have in past reporting gone months without pay when school finances tightened, and in May this year more than 700 junior secondary interns marched in Embu town over KSh 17,000 stipends and stalled confirmation.
The harder allegation is about control. A school that asks a newly famous teacher to lock her phone is not only managing a brand. It is testing how much of her voice it can own.
Cillah’s audience is the asset the pupils were celebrating. It is also the thing a principal who dislikes unmanaged attention would most want switched off.
