Nairobi Garbage Tycoons

Nairobi County Assembly Members (MCAs) have raised alarm over the formation of Green Nairobi Limited, a private garbage collection company allegedly owned by senior county officials, including Environment CECM Maureen Njeri and Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria. With Governor Johnson Sakaja under scrutiny for oversight failures, the Assembly’s Environment Committee has summoned the officials to appear on April 23, 2025, after they repeatedly skipped hearings probing the company’s legitimacy. .

The controversy centers on whether public officials are using their positions to benefit from a private waste management firm while overseeing the county’s garbage collection system. Key questions include how the county’s waste fleet is being managed and whether Green Nairobi Limited was legally established. The officials named have yet to publicly address their alleged involvement, deepening suspicions of impropriety – and putting Governor Sakaja’s administration in the spotlight.

While we wait for their side of the story, such allegations threatens public trust in Nairobi’s governance and raises ethical red flags. Should officials profit from services they regulate? Is this a conflict of interest? With the buck stopping at Sakaja’s desk, how will he address these allegations?
