A Mombasa woman is accusing a doctor of medical negligence that left her with a shattered dream after getting admission to Montana Hospital, a private hospital in Magogoni ward, Kisauni subcounty in Mombasa. Jackline Anyango Auko visited Montana Hospital accompanied by her husband on November 28, 2020 after developing severe labour pain. According to an eye witness, she was told that she needed an urgent operation for her pregnancy and was rushed to the theatre by a doctor. This is when Dr Mwachi, the proprietor of the hospital that has made headline in different quarters, arrived at the theatre. The doctor is known by members of the community to be arrogant, drunk and thirsty for slay queens.
He is also a frequent visitor of Anuba Club, a den of slay queens in Nyali. The pain, however, did not go away but Auko died under unclear circumstances leaving her family shocked. Tension was high when her body was being ferried to the Coast General Referral mortuary following the grief that has stricken the family since Auko died together with the infant. The doctor, however, dismissed the medical negligence accusations and instead claimed Auko had visited the hospital to procure abortion. The husband knew the doctor would treat her and return home feeling better.null
Those in the know claim deaths occur in private hospitals since proprietors have lust for money. But who is the proprietor of Montana Hospital? Those who know Dr Mwachi say he is wheeler-dealer and a bully. He is secretary general of Kenya Medical Practioners and Dentist Union Coast region. The trade union activist is not new to controversy. On December 10 2020 a contingent of county inspectorate officers accompanied with Mombasa county public health officers stormed his hospital following a public outcry. Members of the public had been alarmed by the rot at the health facility.
