Motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway have been stuck in a gridlock near the Gilgil weigh bridge since Friday evening.
The gridlock, stretching for kilometres by this morning, has been worsened by some drivers overlapping, and the wet conditions following a downpour.
The Kenya National Highways Authority says the gridlock was caused by an accident near the rail-over-road bridge between Gilgil turn-off and the weigh bridge.
“Police are currently on site and working on the situation to restore normalcy,” KenHA announced in a statement on Friday night. “Motorists are advised to exercise lane discipline and avoid overlapping as they approach this section in-order to avoid further congestion.”
One of the motorists stuck in the jam said he left Nairobi for Bondo-Siaya on Friday 8pm. “Haki hi hata kama ulikua umemtumia mrembo fulani bus fare unaweza dhani amekula kumbe ni jam tu ndio imemzuia jameni,” jests Holy Bonny on his Facebook page.
By 9am this morning, the situation was yet to improve, with KenHA advising motorists intending to use to seek alternative routes.
“Further to our earlier advisory, motorists planning to travel between Nairobi and Nakuru are advised to use Flyover-Njabini-Olkalou-Lanet or Naivasha-Olkalou-Lanet routes. Trucks are advised to delay their travels until the situation eases at Gilgil. Every effort is being made to enable traffic to start flowing,” said KeNHA.
