Kakamega Governor Barasa On The Spot Over Questionable Vehicle Purchases, Audit Demanded

Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale has raised serious concerns over the way the Fernandes Barasa-led Kakamega County Government has been handling the purchase and disposal of vehicles.

The senator has pointed out several anomalies in the county’s records related to the buying and selling of cars, which has sparked growing public concern.

These concerns prompted the Standing Committee on Finance and Budget to launch an investigation into the matter.

Khalwale, who has been a vocal critic of Governor Barasa, stressed the need for transparency and accountability in managing public resources.

In a statement to the committee, he highlighted the importance of examining how county assets, particularly vehicles, are being handled.

“There has been growing public concern regarding the purchase and disposal of motor vehicles by the County Government of Kakamega,” Khalwale said.

” We are demanding transparency and accountability in the management of county resources.” The senator’s request is simple yet crucial, he wants the county management to provide a comprehensive record of all vehicles purchased by the county from 2014 up to the present.

Khalwale is asking for the details of each vehicle, including the make and model, registration number, purchase date, and the total amount spent.

He believes that such information would provide a clear audit trail of county-owned vehicles, allowing for proper accountability and oversight of county assets over the last decade.

Khalwale is calling for an audit of the vehicles that have been disposed of or retired during the same period. He wants to know the reasons behind the disposal, as well as information about the vehicles such as their make and model, the year they were disposed of, their initial purchase price, and the amount recovered from their sale or disposal.

By making this information public, Khalwale believes the public will better understand how county resources are being managed and whether there have been any irregularities in the process.

Khalwale emphasized the importance of this investigation in ensuring that public resources are used appropriately.

He argued that transparency in recording the purchases and disposals of assets is crucial for good governance and aligned with constitutional requirements.

” The recording of purchases and disposals is consistent with the constitution and is an important component of promoting transparency in governance,” Khalwale said.

The senator’s criticism of Barasa’s administration is not new. He has long accused the governor of mismanagement and failure to deliver services in critical sectors such as healthcare, despite receiving significant funding.

Khalwale has pointed out that, despite the funds allocated to improve healthcare and other services, the county’s performance has been subpar.

He has also raised concerns about the governor’s leadership style, claiming that it has led to a failure to meet the needs of the people. This latest investigation into the county’s vehicle purchases and disposals adds to the growing list of issues that have tarnished Barasa’s reputation.

While the governor has yet to respond to the senator’s allegations, it is clear that public pressure is mounting for a full and transparent review of the county’s finances.

Khalwale’s move is seen as a way to hold the county leadership accountable and ensure that taxpayers’ money is being spent wisely. The outcome of this investigation could have implications for Barasa’s administration and its future dealings with public funds.
