Is Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala of Amani National Congress secretly wining and dining with deputy president William Ruto. A recent incident where a personal assistant to the senator Abel Timona Kachu, died in a grisly accident on way back from attending the Western region economic bloc discussion held in Naivasha organised by William Ruto has left many guessing. Kachu is said to have attended the meeting with direct authority from Senator Malala.
To complicate matters is the talk, Ruto has sidelined former senator Bonny Khalwale in favour of Malala. After being denied funds by Ruto camp, Khalwale has resorted to accompanying UDA leader Johnstone Muthama in attending burial ceremonies in Ukambani rarely in Kakamega county campaigning for governorship.
Khalwale now wants to join Jimi Wanjigi as he eyes presidency. To the shock of many, the deputy president posted on his Twitter account a photo of him and Kachu while at the conference describing him as a brilliant, amiable and industrious man. Malala and Ruto are said to be close friends and recently he was spotted leaving the home of the deputy president at night raising more questions on his loyalty to Mudavadi.
The friendship between two goes back to 2016 when Rashid Echesa introduced him to Ruto when Malala was MCA of Mahiakalo ward, Lurambi sub-county, Kakamega county and it is claimed a house he lives in at a Kakamega town posh estate was partly funded by the DP. The first term senator is also seeking ANC ticket to gun for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat. However, on November 17 2019, Malala following deep-seated differences with ANC leadership said he was ready to go for a senatorial by-election in case he is expelled by ANC party. Malala, who had been suspended, said his suspension by the party was witch-hunt and that he was set to court or the Political Parties Tribunal to seek redress.
The senator said he cannot stand to be intimidated by ANC, which according to him does not value internal democracy. Malala claimed that he was aware ANC had made plans to expel him from the party and give the party ticket to Khalwale in the by-election with the help of Jubilee party.
Malala had been expelled from ANC after being punished for campaigning for Imran Okoth, an ODM candidate in the Kibra by-election. Malala was thrown into mourning following the death Kachu who perished in a grisly road accident along the Nakuru highway on Wednesday, August 25. Elsewhere, Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga mourned him as a selfless servant. The Naivasha meeting was held in the guise of Western economic block which was attended by over 100 participants from the region. However, trouble started when the MPs, who had facilitated the travel to Naivasha, disappeared in thin air with the facilitation fees given out by the DP. Sources confided that some of the participants decided to air their frustrations to Ruto at his Karen residence in vain.
Following the ugly situation, UDA party has suffered a major blow in Western region with the electorate vowing to vote out MPs allied to the party in the coming general election. Politicians heading UDA activities including Khalwale are having hard time selling the party to the electorate due to the lackluster performance of the elected leaders in the DP camp. The delegates who were stranded at the Ruto Karen residence have appealed to Ruto to scout for people with high personal integrity to spearhead UDA campaigns in Western region to a avoid a scenario where party candidates in Kabuchai and Matungu performed dismally. That is why Ruto is reaching out to Malala.
