KNH doctors hold demo, demand reinstatement of sacked medics

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union on Wednesday held a demonstration at KNH, demanding better employment terms for members.

The union wants the hospital to obey a court order on employment and payment of doctors as well as reinstatement of sacked medics.

KMPDU secretary general Davji Atellah said the union is holding a peaceful demonstration at the Accident and Emergency department as it protests against the leadership of hospital CEO Dr Evernson Kamuri.

“The demonstration is a show of displeasure in your leadership, unfair dismissal of doctors in post-graduate training, unfair engagement of doctors on contract in KNH despite it being against the KNH Manual and blatant refusal to obey court orders,” Atellah said.

The union members said they will not relent until fired doctors are reinstated, and until the hospital’s HR manual is fully implemented.

Earlier, doctors had threatened to go on strike every Wednesday at KNH if their demands, including reinstatement are not met.

They also issued warnings to facilities in Laikipia, Kirinyaga, and Kitui counties, saying doctors have been mistreated.

They want reinstatement of sacked colleagues, restoration of study leave, restoration of risk allowances, supply of proper PPEs and say other issues are unresolved. BY THE STAR
