The government of Somalia has suspended Kenyan ambassador Mr. Lucas Tumbo for allegedly interfering with the forthcoming elections.
Somalia’s ministry of foreign affairs disclosed that Kenyan government has on several occasions rooted for Jubaland’s president Axmed Maxamed Islaad with an aim of achieving economic and political interests in Somalia.
“The Federal Government of Somalia notes the Kenyan Government’s attempt to infringe upon the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity of Somalia and hereby express its deepest regret with the Kenyan Government’s continuous interferences in the internal and political affairs of Somalia.” Read Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
According to the Somalia Government, Kenya is using ambassador Lucas Tumbo to push the Jubaland president so that he backs out of the Mogadishu agreement on September 17,2020.
There were initial agreements between the Somali’s president Mr. Mohamed Abdullahi and the other leaders from the five regions to register individual voters. However, the agreement was rejected by Jubaland and Puntland.
According to these regional leaders, registering people to vote would not only make the election insecure due to lack of security but also make the incumbent stay longer in the office.
Somalia noted that it believes in the principles of maintaining friendly neighboring nations and upholding their interdependence. However, according to them, the actions of the Kenyan government has not meant well for these principles.
Their statement added : “However, the Federal Government of Somalia believes that the Kenyan Government actions are not in line with the internationally recognized diplomatic relations enjoyed by sovereign states.”
In the meantime, Kenya may respond to this decision in a number of ways such as withdrawing the Kenya Defence Forces(KDF) from the country.
