Ex-Minister Gideon Ndambuki Is Debt Trapped, Family Worried He’s Losing His Mind

Former cabinet minister Gideon Ndambuki has lost weight and talks to himself with his family fearing for any eventuality. According to a family member, Ndambuki has been deserted and is now a lonely man. The current troubles facing Ndambuki have to do with the recent court ruling that declined his plea to stop the selling of the six-storey Roof Garden Hotel in Machakos town that he inherited from his father.

Alfred Mutua

The prime hotel is situated next to the Machakos bus terminus on 0.400 hectares of land. Machakos Teachers Sacco wants to purchase the hotel through auction. Ndambuki had moved to High Court to stop the auction. Ndambuki in a sworn affidavit in court wanted a review of an earlier debt repayment process and did not want the court to interfere with the consents once registered as they were as good as contractual agreements. Ndambuki owes Housing Finance Sh80 million loan plus interest. Also featuring in Roof Garden Hotel Court battle are other parties. Ndambuki brought in the case Covid-19 saga. In the consent order, Ndambuki was to pay Sh5 million but instead paid Sh4.6 million. To the ruling, the Sh4.6 million was a prime facie default. For decades, the iconic hotel was the talk of Machakos town. It has a restaurant, bar, kitchen and VIP wing and other guest rooms. It earns over Sh1.2 monthly with annual rent paid to Machakos county being Sh3,030. Garam Investments is to auction the property on September 29.

Those out to buy the prime property are to deposit 10pc in cash or banker’s cheque during the auction. The balance is to be offset within three months. Machakos Teachers Sacco is out to buy the establishment with other sources claiming Governor Alfred Mutua who recently opened his new hotel is also eyeing the hotel in a plan to expand his franchise in Machakos and then Nairobi and eventually Mombasa. Ndambuki was Kaiti MP and served as a cabinet minister in Moi days. He was in the Makueni governorship race 2017 but lost. After losing he was appointed chairman of National Social Security Fund an appointment he got courtesy of William Ruto. A pale shadow of his former self during the Moi regime, Ndambuki who also owns the Garden Hotel in Machakos town has a long way climbing from the debt hole.
