KRA’s Kelvin Safari Fired Over Corruption

The KRA Commissioner, Customs and Border Control has been relieved of his duties. Mr Kelvin Safari was fired over allegations of corruption. The Commissioner had been accused by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations of abuse of office where he cleared two storage facilities; Mitchell Cotts Peripheral Storage Facility (PSF) and the Nairobi Inland Cargo Terminal peripheral Storage. As a result of this, the KRA lost revenue that was supposed to be earned from the facilities.

Denying the claims, Mr. Safari said that his approval of the facilities was procedural as it had not affected KRA’s revenue at all. Additionally, according to Safari, opening the facility had assisted in resolving conflict among small scale traders in Nyamakima, Gikomba, and Kamukunji in terms of accessibility to their wares.

Following this, Mr. Safari had written to the DPP on March 7, 2020, asking him to stop the prosecution that had been proposed by the DCI. Safari was to be charged alongside former KPA Managing Director, Daniel Manduku. He had been arraigned in court in early March but had not taken plea as the DPP wanted a further review of the allegations.
