Jilted Lover Fined Sh5M For Leaking Ex-Girlfriend’s Nudes

A 22-year-old man will serve five years in jail or pay Sh5 million fine for sharing nude photos of his ex-lover on social media. Joseph Njuguna Mungai was found guilty of cyberbullying and distribution of obscene images.

During the plea taking before Makadara Chief Magistrate Hellen Onkwani, Mungai was warned that the case had dire consequences. The court warned him that, “A person found guilty of sharing nudes is liable to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years or to a fine not exceeding Sh20 million or to both.”

According to court papers, Mungai, 22, wrongfully and willfully shared the pictures of a woman on Telegram with her colleagues. The photos also reached relatives and friends of the complainant between June 14 and June 16. The court was told that Mungai and the woman had dated for two years but their relationship hit the rocks when he reportedly became overprotective and insecure. At some point, the court heard, he started being violent, leading to the break-up.

It was then that he is said to have taken her nude photos and shared them on online platforms. The act is said to have disturbed the woman who decided to take legal action.
The court was told that even after parting ways for two years, Mungai continued sharing the photos before he was arrested after the complainant learned that the photos were circulating for the second time.

She was then advised to report the matter to Kasarani Police Station. Mungai, in his mitigation, told the court that he shared the photos out of anger and devastation after being dumped.

“I was emotionally wrecked. I am asking for more time to make peace with the victim and ask for forgiveness. I urge the court to be lenient,” he pleaded.

He added that he was yet to join a college and admitted that he had understood the repercussions of cyberbullying and that he was remorseful. He was then handed the punishment.
