NE Investigates: The Untold Truths About The Beggars In Nairobi Street

Talking about beggars in a negative manner is considered a taboo amongst many and often seen as a bad omen, however there are several observations which have been made by the ever working hard Nairobi Exposed Investigate Team and im more than happy to present the facts findings. Beggars are in almost every corner of the streets but the big question is how genuine are they,of course in the society we can’t and shall never ne at par some people will be privileged and some underprivileged. Close observation across the beggars in the streets not only in Nairobi but a larger population of the major cities in Kenya reveals the following traits:
•Using Infants to beg
– You probably must have fallen a victim into this scenario, there is always that woman seated with a bunch of hungry face kids if not one. The essence here is people have soft spot towards children and will most probably donate for the sake of the crying baby and not an adult. The begging question is are those their kids? Preliminary investigations reveals a scheme of how them the beggars will higher toddlers to accompany them to the “jpb sites” if you noticed, most of the times the babies will be crying, reason? They want their mummy who unfortunately isn’t there and had leased them to the beggars at a price, its however worthy noting both parties involved in this scheme are streets families. Not all of them hire kids some are genuine and use their own.
• They prefer monetary donations over food
– It’s all about the legal tender, they really hate it when you pass them over a donation in food form, in a basic matter human needs includes food, clothing and shelter so if you were to offer help it ought to fall within that bracket but these beggars put money on the forefront and to verify this a test query was posed to them as to what they want money or food and the common reply(nipe tu pesa nitajinunulia mbeke mandondo) again try offering them food and take a look at their faces,do you read disappointments.
• With the disability/ailment lays the greatest asset
– You ever wondered how comes their is this one beggar who has the same injury that never heals? They just put it out in the scorching sun whole day. They never wish for it to fully heal ad that is where their “businesses commodity” rests, infact theories have it that if the wound tries to heal they will inflict more injuries into it to worsen it,after all the healing of wound literally throws you out of the sympathy view.
• Its a business
-Not only once has the grand scheme been exposed, sometimes back there was an expose on the Kenyans TV showing how children are being used to run the unethical booming business, revelations were made on how certain people  would plant kids in various points in the city early in the morning and come for them early in the evening, this is a modern day slavery and child labour and abuse, the children are given an ultimate amount to make at the end of the day. The “owner of the kids” collects all the money collected from the dozens of kids planted allover town, the sad part is despite all these the kids occasionally end up hungry as all money goes to the pimp.
• They have territories,never trespass or else…
– Its emerging that they have their territories such that no beggar should cross and base at someone else’s grounds or risk a war,you will realise that their is this beggar who is always at the same location and streets year in year out. The rule is simple don’t come to my territory.
• The donation plate is always filled with high value currency

– You probably have noticed that the plates have currency value of 20 and above, this is read as a way to make you make donations of that value going up,its a subliminal message that they don’t want anything below that value, safe to say they are choosy.

• Same old tricks just a different day,the freelancing beggar.

– There is that Guy who is smartly dressed, you most probably have bumped into him this is what he does,he approaches you gloomy face talking about how he came for an interview in town and got mugged,he needs nothing but just fare to get him back home if you are generous you empathize with him and donate, don’t be surprised if you meet the same person approaching you the same problem few Weeks or even days after. This is just a sample case there are several.

• Not all are fake nor genuine

– There are those who are helpless and sure needs the help of the society that’s a fact and there are the fakes who are out to make a kill out off it,did you know amongst them there is that beggar known as sonko because of their perfection in the game, these are guys who can make thousands in a day without breaking a sweat.
