Deputy President William Ruto has promised to deposit Sh1 million into a Sacco run by sex workers in Mtito Andei.
The sex workers had appealed to the DP to speed up the ‘Hustlers Empowerment Fund’ that will enable them to switch careers and pursue more respectful ventures.
In response, Ruto asked the sex workers to organise themselves into a Sacco.
Its is in that Sacco that he will deposit Sh1 million to help them realize their dream of getting into legit business.
Ruto also promised to keep tabs and ensure their new venture thrives.
The Deputy President has drummed up support for the bottom-up economic model, saying it speaks the language of the common mwananchi.
Ruto said the model focuses on uplifting the lives of citizens, especially low-income earners, in a manner that gradually propels them to better economic scales.
The DP said the bottom-up model will empower small business people, farmers and SMEs who are currently suffering in the hands of shylocks and predatory lenders who charge outrageous interest.
Ruto is rallying supporters around his ‘hustler narrative’, which he says is a “bottom-up-middle-out economic approach” that has been received with admiration and criticism in equal measure.
His supporters think it is the solution to bridge the widening gap between the rich and the poor while critics including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have rubbished it saying it is a copy and paste manifesto of the ODM party.
