Nick Mwendwa Sends Goons To Disrupt Press Address Of Journalist Who Wanted FKF Investigated Over Fraud

Drama was on Sunday witnessed at a local hotel along Ngong Road in Nairobi when a sports journalist was attacked by goons as he was addressing a press conference.

Milton Nyakundi was having a press conference to discuss matters football in the country, but his plans were interrupted by goons who arrived in a number of cars.

Nyakundi is behind a letter that was penned to the Ministry of Sports, demanding Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Nick Mwenda is investigated for gross misconduct.

It took the intervention of police officers drawn from Kilimani Police Station to restore calmness with Nyakundi going on with the press conference.

Speaking to the press, Nyakundi accused Mwendwa of being behind the disruption.

“They should face me instead of taking advantage of those Kariobangi and Makongeni youths. I am willing to engage them in a debate and deconstruct their lies on national television and give evidence of how they have plundered FKF money,” narrated Nyakundi.

However, Mwendwa asserted he cannot respond to such claims that were being raised by Nyakundi.

“I cannot respond to such claims, my friend,” he said, before hanging up.

In his statement to the press, Nyakundi said that all officials at FKF should step aside as they were now subject to investigations.

He said that for years a lot has been stagnant when it comes to matters of Kenyan sports, and it was time things are made right.

Nyakundi further said that when he started raising concerns on how sports were being mismanaged in the country, he was threatened and even cajoled.

“Most of our colleague journalists were quiet as the FKF leadership steadily presided over anarchy in total disregard for the rule of law and impunity as though they were beyond reproach like Caesar’s wife,” he said, adding that he never lost hope in raising the concerns.

He went ahead to thank the Judiciary, particularly Justice Makau for demonstrating they stand for what was right.

“I salute the government which is finally taking action through the Cabinet Secretary and the Principal Secretary as demonstrated by the decision to direct the Sports Registrar to undertake a lawful audit on the affairs of the FKF, which audit I believe will unearth the rot and malfeasance at Kandanda House,” he said.

He called upon the sports registrar to make the audit public and also ensure that it is conducted by a multi-agency team that involves sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Auditor General, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Public Oversight Authority.

“This is necessary because exchequer money has been expended by the FKF without adhering to the public finance management laws and regulations,” he said.

Nyamweya also said that FIFA should not interfere with the process of investigations because they have subjected themselves to public audit and are subject to the Swiss Laws as the FKF must be to Kenyan laws.

“I urge that the government and the world-governing body engage with an open mind with a view to reviving Kenyan football and bringing to justice those who have brought it into disrepute,” he said.

On June 10, 2020- Nyamweya penned a letter to the Sports Registrar Rose Wasike petitioning her to invoke Section 52 of the Sports Act and order for an inspection on the affairs of FKF and I detailed the scope of the audit.

He also copied the letter to CS Amina Mohammed, who also gave the Registrar of sports to go ahead and investigate FKF.

Nyamweya also went ahead and penned a letter to the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit, flagging fictitious transactions at the Federation.

This saw the matter move to court and the High Court gave a go ahead that FKF is investigated.
