Wicknell Chivayo is one of the most prominent, wealthy, and controversial businessmen in Zimbabwe today. Born in Harare in 1982, he rose to national prominence through his involvement in large infrastructure and energy projects, particularly after his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, secured a multimillion-dollar contract to develop the Gwanda Solar Power Project. Over the years, he has transformed himself into a household name across Southern Africa, known as much for his lavish lifestyle and public philanthropy as for the controversies that have followed his business dealings.
Chivayo’s rise has been closely linked to the energy sector and government procurement. His company was awarded a contract worth approximately US$173 million to construct a solar power station in Gwanda, a project intended to help address Zimbabwe’s chronic electricity shortages. However, the project became one of the country’s most controversial public contracts after years passed with little visible progress despite payments having been made.
The delays triggered investigations, court battles, political scrutiny, and widespread public criticism. Authorities alleged that funds had been improperly obtained, while Chivayo consistently maintained that the delays resulted from contractual disputes and administrative challenges rather than fraud. Subsequent court rulings largely favored his contractual position, and criminal proceedings brought against him were eventually dismissed or resulted in acquittals, though public debate over the project continues.
Beyond business, Chivayo has cultivated an image of extraordinary wealth. Social media is filled with images of him alongside luxury vehicles, designer clothing, private jets, and multimillion-dollar properties. He frequently purchases high-end vehicles such as Rolls-Royces, Mercedes-Benzes, Range Rovers, Bentleys, and Ferraris. Unlike many wealthy businessmen who keep a low profile, Chivayo openly showcases his lifestyle and often uses social media to announce gifts and donations.
His philanthropy has become one of his defining characteristics. Over the past several years, he has donated hundreds of vehicles and substantial amounts of money to musicians, journalists, church leaders, athletes, political supporters, and ordinary citizens facing hardship. Many recipients have publicly expressed gratitude, describing him as one of the most generous individuals in Zimbabwe. His supporters argue that regardless of how he made his fortune, he has used a significant portion of it to improve the lives of others. Critics, however, contend that many of these donations appear carefully targeted toward influential public figures and may serve political, social, or reputational objectives.
Politically, Chivayo is widely regarded as being close to Zimbabwe’s ruling establishment and has publicly expressed support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the governing party, ZANU–PF. This proximity to political power has fueled speculation that his business success is connected to influential relationships within government. While critics frequently raise concerns about the awarding of public contracts, no court has concluded that his contracts were obtained illegally.
His personal life has also attracted considerable public attention. His marriage to Sonja Madzikanda was widely publicized, as was their eventual divorce. In 2025, he married Lucy Muteke in another high-profile ceremony that generated extensive media coverage. Like many aspects of his life, his relationships have often been discussed in the public domain due to his celebrity status.
Perhaps more than any other businessman in Zimbabwe, Chivayo embodies the ongoing debate about wealth, power, and accountability in modern Africa.
To admirers, he represents entrepreneurial success, generosity, and ambition.
To critics, he symbolizes the lack of transparency that can surround public procurement and political influence. What is undeniable is that he has become one of the most influential and talked-about figures in Zimbabwe, with a reputation that extends far beyond the country’s borders and into broader discussions about business, governance, and wealth across Africa.
