Sonko Fires Lawyers Cecil Miller And George Kithi In Corruption Cases

Former Nairobi County Governor, Mike Sonko, on Wednesday broke down in tears as he explained to the court that he has a new team of lawyers who will represent him in his ongoing corruption case.

Last week, during the last hearing on his case on January 26, he informed the court that he had fired his lawyers, Cecil Miller and George Kithi.

Therefore, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti gave him seven more days, that is until Tuesday, February 2, to get a new legal team.

But Sonko’s new lawyers, Alfred Nyamu, John Khaminwa and Assa Nyakundi sought more time on Wednesday, telling the court that they need 30 days to get proper instructions and peruse court proceedings.

The state counsel, however, objected to the request for 10 days and urged the court to only give the new team seven days to familiarise themselves with the case.

So far 10 witnesses have testified in Sonko’s prosecution case in which Sonko is charged with abuse of office over a revenue collection tender.

The case kicked off last year with the first witness, who has been in protective custody alongside two others, revealing how Sonko allegedly influenced the tender process for the revenue collection procurement.
