Kampala, Uganda — The death of a 30-year-old man following a violent mob attack in Kampala has sparked intense public debate over vigilante justice, banking disputes, and the circumstances surrounding events that led to his final moments.
The deceased, identified as Lubega Fahad, died after suffering severe injuries in an incident that initially generated conflicting accounts from witnesses, social media users, police, and Diamond Trust Bank Uganda.
Early reports circulating online alleged that Fahad had visited Diamond Trust Bank’s Ntinda branch to withdraw money when a confrontation broke out after bank officials reportedly linked him to a previous disputed transaction. Social media accounts claimed that security personnel attempted to restrain him and that boda boda riders in the area mistakenly believed a robbery was underway, leading to a brutal assault.
The reports quickly gained traction online, prompting widespread criticism and demands for answers from both the bank and law enforcement agencies.
Diamond Trust Bank Uganda later issued a statement expressing condolences to Fahad’s family and confirming that he had passed away. The bank stated that its last direct interaction with him occurred on June 2 at its Naalya branch after a complaint relating to a transaction. According to the bank, the matter had been referred to police for further investigation.
While the institution pledged cooperation with investigators, it did not publicly address many of the allegations that had circulated regarding events at the Ntinda branch.

The Uganda Police Force subsequently released a clarification after initial reports suggested that no such incident had been recorded at Kira Road Police Station.
Police later confirmed that Fahad died following an assault in Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule. According to preliminary investigations, Fahad had allegedly been implicated in a rental scam conducted through the online marketplace Jiji Uganda. Investigators said a complainant reported sending approximately UGX 12 million to Fahad’s Diamond Trust Bank account after being promised rental property services.
Police stated that Fahad was allegedly recognized by members of the public, who pursued and assaulted him before he was taken to Kiwatule Police Station. He was later pronounced dead after succumbing to his injuries.
Authorities emphasized that investigations remain ongoing into both the alleged fraud case and the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault. A postmortem examination was also ordered as part of the inquiry.
The case has once again highlighted Uganda’s persistent challenge with mob justice, a phenomenon that human rights organizations and law enforcement agencies have repeatedly condemned. Critics argue that public frustration with lengthy investigations, slow judicial processes, and perceived impunity has contributed to a culture where suspects are sometimes subjected to violence before authorities can establish the facts.
Legal experts note that regardless of any allegations against an individual, criminal responsibility can only be determined through due process and the courts.
The tragedy has also renewed scrutiny of how financial institutions handle suspected fraud cases and customer disputes. Banking analysts say incidents involving allegations of financial misconduct require careful coordination between banks, security personnel, and law enforcement agencies to prevent confrontations from escalating into violence.
As investigations continue, several critical questions remain unanswered. Authorities have yet to establish the full sequence of events that led to the assault, determine who participated in the attack, and clarify whether any opportunities existed to prevent the fatal outcome.
For Fahad’s family, the focus remains on obtaining answers and accountability.
His death stands as another stark reminder of the dangers posed by mob justice and the importance of allowing investigations and courts, rather than public anger, to determine guilt or innocence.
The Uganda Police Force has urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activity to authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands, warning that vigilante actions often result in further loss of life and undermine the justice system.
