Dutch national denies stealing six iPhone XS worth Sh792, 000

ADutch national, who had been charged with stealing iPhones and illegally being in the country, is yet to testify following his plea of not guilty. The court heard that Jack Dekkers is alleged to have, with another person not before court,  stolen six iPhone XS Max GB all valued at Sh792,000, the property of Thomas Kanini Kubai. On the day of his arrest, the court was told, he had ordered ten iPhones to be delivered to him at an office in Westlands.

According to court documents, the alleged theft happened on April 18, 2019 at Watermark in Karen. Dekkers was also charged on April 25 with being in Kenya unlawfully. While testifying at the Kibera Law Courts, 28-year-old businessman Thomas Kanini Kubai, who operates an electronic shop on Moi Avenue in Nairobi, said that his brother reported to his shop that day at about 8:45am and took six iPhones saying he was to deliver them to a client at Watermark in Karen.

The court heard that Kubai’s brother took long before returning and he had to call him to confirm if he got there with the phones and receipts. Kubai’s brother informed him that Dekkers was still verifying if the phones were genuine. “Moments later, my brother informed me that he had a problem and so I took a motorbike to Watermark,” he said.

At the Watermark, Kubai found his brother at the reception desk and told him that Dekkers had taken him round in circles after he lied to him that he had gone to Galleria Mall to withdraw money so that he could pay in cash. Kubai learned that Dekkers had switched off his phone after luring his brother to meet him at Galleria where he requested for an account number to deposit the money into.

During the trial, the court heard that Dekkers never went back to Watermark and instead disappeared with the phones without making any payments. A week later, Kubai got a request from a white guy who wanted ten iPhones to be delivered at an office in Westlands. Kubai got suspicious and reported the matter to police from Karen who laid a trap for him. They asked him to direct them to the office where he was. Kubai positively identified him.
