Gor Mahia is one of the biggest football clubs in Kenya with overwhelmingly huge following across the country. Football in Kenya has been in the past few years been rekindled and the dying flames of the premier league in Kenya reincarnated back to life. These days it’s not a surprise to find a stadium fully packed with fans. Gor Mahia is such one club that have its fans overflow the stadium.
Football like any other profession has become a good income generation outlet for the players,Gor is also amongst the best paying clubs in Kenya,it also boasts of having top of class coaches in the region, recently they had a Croatian coach Logarusic who was later to be fired over sexually inflicted scandals in the team’s circle then Weeks later came Bobby Williamson who was a national coach for the Uganda Cranes,he was hired to Gor on a multimillion deal. All these developments points at one thing, the team must be making good money to sustain all the expenses. The club makes money from corporate partnerships, gates collections, organised clubs branches and national membership collections the figures arising are in hundreds of millions,Gor is ranked as amongst the top richest clubs in the region.
However despite all these glamour the team has been lacking some key facilities and a blueprint has been laid out which if implemented would see Gor measure up with international standards. According to George Aseda, one of the aspirants fighting to outhrow the incumbent chairman Rachier, there is a plan which is implementable to see Gor have its own stadium for training purposes fully equipped and furnished with world class gym equipments, most of the big clubs in the world operate in this system. The project is to be funded through donors and corporate partnership with willing partners. Increasing sales in clubs official merchandise eg Jerseys, bands amongst others, currently the club is making 18m annually from the sales and if the plan is implemented, the total earnings from the merchandise sales only could sprouse up to sh.250m. The gates collections through online tickets sales and promotions could see the figures increase by double digits.
Adede reveals of a plan to ensure the players gets the fair deal of the cake by increasing their income, making the least paid player to earn sh.100k,this would see Gor emerge as the best paying club in the soil. Apart from the increased salaries, their is a plan to give all the players medical cover, this is very vital part of the game that would see players motivated and fans sprung. And until then time will give the answer.
