The city council askaris and more precisely the Nairobi’s are known for their ruthless manner of dealing with the city residents,sometimes lawful but majority of times unlawful. They have become under scrutiny and media shaming but they seem to care less,with Kidero taking charge of the council many hoped that this could change things and give the councils’ tarnished image a facelift but this has since remained a wishful thinking,the askaris continues to harass the residents.
The latest victim to fall into their inhuman noose is University of Nairobi student who was on Sunday walking from Muthurwa and witnessed the boys crucifying an old woman,according to the student narrating his story to NE,the askaris were dragging the old woman in her 80’s along the tarmac road,she was accompanied by her grand kids who watched helplessly as their grandmother was being subjected to this inhuman act,the incidence occurred around mkulima house building in the cbd,a large crowd formed and were throwing tantrums at the ruthless officers to spare the poor woman but all that fell on deaf ears as they continued. At this point,the student uttered “May God forgive them” those words could later hand him to the bad boys hands.As he was speaking unknown to him,another askari was standing right up next to him and heard the words,immediately he was grabbed and tiptoed to the defaced city council vans and later taken to their detention camp. His offence was saying”may God forgive them” The incidence took place in Sunday and the student had his exams kicking off the next day,he pleaded with them to let him go,and at this point they shamelessly asked for sh.5000 bribe to let him go,having no option and avoiding the risk of missing his end of semester exams,he had to part with the amount. Worse still is the fact that the old woman in question is handicapped and was pulled out of her wheelchair.
The trend of inhuman and harassment of residents by the askaris has to come to an halt if things continue to remain the same with no action taken against the offenders then the suffering is still here to stay.
