Deputy President William Ruto was forced to scrap his trip to Qatar last week after his visa was controversially cancelled by the authorities in Doha.
He said that the DP’s visa may have been cancelled after Nairobi expressed displeasure at the DP’s visit to The Qatari authorities, perhaps in response to the negative comments Ruto allegedly made against President Uhuru Kenyatta while on a visit to the US and the UK. President Uhuru Kenyatta is a personal friend to the Qatari ruling family.
Last week the DP arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the dead of night to a cold and seemingly hostile reception after his 12-day overseas trip. The DP arrived at JKIA only to discover that there was no government official to welcome him back home, he only found a team of airport staff and security officials with face masks. He returned home after causing more damage against the country in foreign capitals when he insinuated that there was a plan to rig elections on August 9th.
He seems to have succeeded in scaring away investors and tourists, quite the opposite of what his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta would have done. Instead, the DP went round “crying”, painting the country and his boss black!
The anti-Ruto forces seem to have multiplied in dizzying numbers since the DP left the country and went on an attacking spree against the country and her leaders.
The attacks against the government are seen as counterproductive. Ruto also used quite un-savoury remarks against COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli which has never been his style.
The die is cast and the two-horse race is entering the homestretch with Kenyatta-Raila massing parties under the Azmio la Umoja. Whether this translates into votes sufficient to defeat Ruto on August 9 remains to be seen.
