Why Anticipated Obado’s Impeachment Motion Failed To Take Off Today

The anticipated impeachment motion against Migori Governor Okoth Obado wasn’t tabled in the County Assembly today (Tuesday, September 8) as had earlier been expected.

County Assembly Speaker, Boaz Okoth, said a debate on the matter could not kick off because “the Assembly was packed to capacity, yet he (the Speaker) did not have enough time to put in place measures to observe social distancing”.

“I cannot afford to be the one overseeing the contravention of COVID-19 safety measures put in place by the Ministry of Health,” he said.

The MCAs were on recess since August 6. They resumed House activities on Tuesday, September 8, with the Obado-impeachment motion lined up for debate.

After opening the County Assembly for House business, Speaker Okoth directed that the MCAs resume sessions on Wednesday, September 9, when proper social distancing measures would have been put in place.

A contingent of law enforcement officers, including regular police and the GSU, was deployed to the County Assembly to quell any resultant chaos following the tabling of Obado impeachment motion.

On August 31, ODM threw its weight behind the removal from office of Governor Obado, citing graft charges against the second-term county chief as ripe grounds for his ejection.
