President Yoweri Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, now says retired President Uhuru Kenyatta left office too soon.
In a tweet thread on Monday, October 3, Kainerugaba, currently serving as the commander of the land forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Force, wished Uhuru contested for another term in office.
The military man said Uhuru would have won easily in the race that pitted his former deputy William Ruto and Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga.
He shared the sentiments after a phone conversation with the former Head of State who he described as an incredible, honest and intelligent man.
General Kainerugaba also disclosed that Uhuru ‘will visit Uganda soon’.
“Just spoke to my big brother, Afande Uhuru. An incredible man! I love him for his courage, honesty and intelligence! He will visit Uganda soon,” Kainerugaba said.
“My only problem with my beloved big brother is that he didn’t stand for a third term. We would have won easily! (sic),”
Uhuru exits
Uhuru proceeded to retirement on September 13, after serving two five-year terms in line with the provisions of the 2010 Constitution. He couldn’t seek another term in office.
He was succeeded by his estranged deputy, Ruto, who he campaigned against in the presidential polls conducted on August 9.
Uhuru and the military official met in Nairobi two months before the August polls.
In a statement on June 8, State House Kenya said the two discussed bilateral and multilateral issues of interest to Kenya and Uganda.
“During the meeting, President Kenyatta and Lt. General Kainerugaba discussed several bilateral and multilateral issues of interest to Kenya and Uganda. Among the issues discussed included the restoration of peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” a tweet by State House read.
On his part, General Muhoozi expressed gratitude to Uhuru for hosting him during his diplomatic visit.
“It was an honour and pleasure to meet my big brother and friend President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi recently. I also delivered to him a special message from H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.” Muhoozi said in his tweet.
Museveni has ruled Uganda for nearly four decades having assumed office on January 29, 1986.
