Ruto Dishes Sh14M Cash Handouts In 2 Days During Meru Tour

Deputy President William Ruto’s Sh14 million donation to Meru residents during his two-day campaign stopovers left some raising questions.

In each stop Ruto donated not less than Sh300,000 to Sh2 million.

In Tigania West, Ruto donated Sh1.1 million to boda boda saccos, Sh200,000 to women’s groups, Sh300,000 to Meru University students and Sh100,000 to his Kianjai supporters.

On Monday, Ruto donated Sh5.8 million in Imenti Central, North Imenti and in South Imenti.

On Tuesday, he donated Sh8.2 million, where in Igembe South Ruto gave Sh2 million in Maua town and Sh200,000 to help a bereaved family.

In Tigania East, he donated Sh600,000 at Mikinduri town and Sh600,000 at Muriri market.

In Igembe North Ruto gave out Sh600,000 at Mutuati, Sh500,000 at Antubetwe and in Igembe Central the DP donated Sh1.5million at Kangeta.

Whether the money reached the intended beneficiaries is not known.

Residents said the money could have been used to mitigate the devastating effects of drought in parts of Buuri, Tigania and Igembe.

Kubai Thuranira, Kianjai ward aspiring MCA, told the Star on Tuesday, there are schools that need feeding programmes to help keep learners in class and the community is in dire need of water.

“I have launched an initiative, Kwina Wirigiro (There is Hope), after many people approached me for aid when I announced intentions to vie.

“This year I have issued 250 boxes, school bags, partial bursary aid to 30 learners, 10 scholarships to bright but needy students, donated 240kgs of Ndengu in dry areas and partial feeding programme,” Thuranira, who is also the ANC Meru branch party chairman, said.

He thanked Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s administration and Tigania West MP John Mutunga for sinking boreholes but said they have not covered all challenged areas.

Thuranira said many parts of Muthara ward and Igembe are affected by the drought and animals face starvation.

In Thangatha Ward, farmers are also counting losses after their crops rot due to insufficient rainfall.
