Museveni Suggests Murder Convicts To Be Hanged

President Museveni Saturday said he was thrilled to see Ugandans enjoying themselves in a peaceful environment. This he said was at singer Catherine Kusasira’s concert at Serena Hotel in Kampala.

“Last night (at Catherine Kusasira’s show) was the third time I have been to a music concert and I was thrilled to see Ugandans enjoying themselves in a peaceful environment,” Mr. Museveni tweeted on Saturday.

At the concert on Friday, the president blamed the increased criminal cases in the country on judges and magistrates who release suspects. According to him, rape and murder suspects are not supposed to be granted bail.

“And if a person is convicted of murder, they should be hanged,” he said.

In response to Ronald Mayinja’s performance of his 2018 political release Mzee Bizeemu, the president said Mayinja who hopes to contest for Gomba East MP seat in 2021 had distorted some facts. According to him, a repeat of murders, rape and other crimes referred to in Mayinja’s song were committed by the past governments.

“Although some people have been killed of recent, it’s the work of criminals we’re trying to fight and not our government. When you sing that Bizeemu (a repeat of what happened in the past governments) then you’re lying,” he said.

Mr.  Museveni implored artistes to use their talents in ways that do not sow divisions based on lies.
He also pledged the government’s effort towards working against all the threats and crimes against Uganda and her people.

However, this is not the first time the president is advocating for death penalty of murder and rape convicts.
In his message following several murder cases including that of a social worker Maria Nagirinya alongside her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa and that of his nephew Joshua Rushegyera Nteireho and a woman named Merina Tumukunde, the president said murder and rape convicts should be given severe punishments, including the hanging.

“The NRM always believes in the Law of Moses: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” the president said in the statement he released early this month.
