Majority of Kenyans Expect Raila Odinga to Run For Presidency in 2027, TIFA Poll Shows

A new survey released by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) has revealed that a majority of Kenyans believe opposition leader Raila Odinga will rejoin the opposition and contest the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

According to the poll released on Wednesday, 28% of respondents believe the former Prime Minister will return to active opposition politics and present himself as a presidential candidate. This comes amid growing uncertainty surrounding Raila’s political future following his decision to collaborate with President William Ruto in forming a broad-based government.

The poll also shows that 23% of Kenyans expect Raila to support President Ruto’s re-election bid, while 18% believe he will back another opposition candidate. Meanwhile, 14% anticipate that he will retire from active politics altogether, and 16% remain uncertain about his next move.

Raila’s potential candidacy is viewed as a pivotal factor that could heavily influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. With a long history in opposition politics and five presidential campaigns behind him, his next steps are being closely watched by both allies and rivals.

In addition to views on Raila’s political trajectory, the TIFA survey also gauged public opinion on the current broad-based government. The results show a deeply divided nation, with 54% of respondents expressing disapproval of the arrangement. Only 22% support it, while 25% said they have no opinion.

The poll reflects the ongoing political realignments and debates shaping Kenya’s path toward the next general elections, underscoring the continued significance of Raila Odinga’s role in national politics.
