The embattled president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nelson Havi has declared interest to run for the Westlands Parliamentary seat.
In a statement he made on his Twitter handle on Monday 10th, the controversial LSK boss says he was approached by residents of the constituency to run for the seat.
“I have accepted the request of the people of Westlands Constituency to serve them and the nation in that capacity of an MP effective August 2022 or earlier in the event Parliament is dissolved,” Havi said in the video recording he shared.
Havi demonstrated his understanding of the duties of a Member of Parliament and exuded confidence that he is up to the task.
He pledged to serve residents of Westlands Constituency diligently once he assumes the office as their MP.
“The constitution enumerates functions and duties of a Member of National Assembly thus: making laws and protecting the constitution; determining the allocation of national revenue and oversight of its expenditure; reviewing the conduct of State officers and oversight of State organs; and infrastructural development, wealth creation and poverty alleviation at the constituency level,” he stated.
His pronouncement comes days after social media influencer Aurther Mandela, alias Xtian Dela, declared that he will be in the race for the same seat.
It is not clear yet whether the current officeholder Tim Wanyonyi will also be in the race retain the seat since he has shown interest in running for Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
MP Wanyonyi is serving his second term in office. He was first elected into office in 2013 on an ODM ticket.
Westlands Constituency is home to high suburb areas such as Runda, Lakeview, Muthaiga, Kitisuru and Highridge, as well as slum areas like Kangemi Githogoro, DeepSea, Mji Wa Huruma, Kaptagat, Kibagare, Ndumboini, Maasai and Suswa.
As per 2017 data, Westlands had 152,718 registered voters.
