KANU MCAs In Baringo File Petition To Overturn Assembly’s Verdict On BBI

A section of disgruntled Baringo MCAs, majorly drawn from the KANU party, have gone to court seeking to overturn the recent shooting down of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) driven Constitutional Amendment Bill.

Speaking after filing a petition at the Kabarnet High Court on Monday, through their lawyer Gordon Ogola, the MCAs said the assembly failed to follow the law citing lack of public participation among the electorate.

KANU Nominated MCA Betty Birchogo said the views of the people were not included in the Bill, blaming the assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee for rushing it to the House for discussion.

“The views of those members were not the views of the people of Baringo…people of Baringo want public participation, that’s waht we want, let this people say Yes or No,” said Ms. Birchogo.

Chaos erupted in the County Assembly during the debate where 30 MCAs rejected the bill while 11 were in support, making Baringo the first county to reject the bill.

KANU party leaders have since urged Baringo residents to punish MCAs who rejected the BBI driven Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020 by not re-electing them in the next General Elections.

Speaking in Njoro on February 12, the KANU leaders led by party boss and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi termed reasons given by some of the MCAs to cause chaos and reject the BBI Bill as lame.

“Wacha mimi ntaingia iyo Baringo, ni ma MCA wamekataa, lakini si kusema kwamba raia wamekataa. Watatuona huko saa ile tunapitisha hiyo kitu mbele mbele, tutaenda huko groundwork na watajua,” said Rongai MP Raymond Moi.

“Na mimi nawaambia wote wa Baringo, wale ma MCA walikataa hiyo kitu, 2022 fagieni hao yote waende nyumbani.”
