Deputy President William Ruto has retreated to his Rift Valley backyard, in an effort to consolidate the region and have it under his grip. This follows days of political hibernation after President Uhuru Kenyatta banned political meetings for 60 days.
Top on Ruto’s agenda is dismantling the Moi family’s political connection as he prepares for the final assault in next year’s election. It is these links that the Deputy President’s men believe Senator Moi will use to influence the region’s political direction in 2022.
Among those targetted are former influential figures of the Moi regime, business moguls, and religious leaders close to the former president’s family. Notable names include Mr. Joshua Kulei ( former President’s PA), former cabinet minister Franklin Bett, Mr. Benjamin Sogomo (a former PS under Moi), veteran politician Henry Kosgey, and Bishop Silas Yego.
”Lee Njiru is an asset to our camp because of his connection to influential figures in Mzee Moi’s regime,” Keiyo South MP Daniel Rono told a local publication on Wednesday when asked about the plan.
According to an MP who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity, Ruto is targeting these individuals to assist him (the DP) consolidate the region, to a man.
”We want to ensure the DP has no strong competitor in Kalenjin land and that’s why we’re targeting those who were powerful in Mzee Moi’s regime. Gideon will only remain with Tiaty MP William Kamket and Kanu Secretary-General Nick Salat,” the MP said.
Gideon Moi, the youngest son of late President Moi is the only Rift Valley leader currently posing a threat to DP Ruto’s efforts to have the region vote in a single basket in 2022. The Baringo Senator is an ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, whom Ruto is at war with.
