I Spent Sh15M On Agents Only, Sakaja Decries Expensive Kenyan Elections

Nairobi Governor-elect Johnson Sakaja says he spent Ksh.15 million to pay his agents for work done during the August 9th elections.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s News Night show, Sakaja decried the complexity of the country’s electoral process saying it comes with a heavy financial burden for political candidates.

Sakaja pointed out that he had 3,643 agents across the various polling stations in Nairobi, noting that they had gobbled up a cool Ksh.15 million.

The Nairobi Governor-elect noted that he could only afford to pay the agents for three days, adding that for the extra days that were consumed by the vote tallying and verification exercise his supporters provided service for free.

“We need to have an electronic transmission for our polls. I have just finished sorting out my agents. It cost me Ksh.15 million. I had 3643 agents for 3 days of work the rest ilikua kujitolea,” said Sakaja.

He further highlighted that he had 396 polling centre managers as well as mobilisers, all of whom made up for additional expenditure.

Sakaja who was running on a UDA party ticket emerged winner in the Nairobi Governor race after garnering 699,392 votes to trounce his competitor Polycarp Igathe of the Jubilee Party who got 573,516 votes.
