Handshake Party? Junet Registers ‘Azimio la Umoja’ Coalition Name

The Registrar of Political Parties has confirmed reservation of the name ‘Azimio la Umoja’ as a coalition name as requested by Junet Mohamed, a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“Your application has been considered as required by law and the Azimio La Umoja has been reserved for use as political party coalition name,” said political parties registrar Anne Nderitu in a letter to Junet Mohammed dated October 28, 2021.

Mr. Mohamed, who is the Minority Chief Whip in the National Assembly, is also a member of the Jubilee-ODM led coalition building team together with Raphael Tuju, David Murathe and Edwin Sifuna.

The Political Parties Act stipulates that an application for reservation of a name shall be for a period of not more than 90 days.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has in the recent past been campaigning under the banner ‘Azimio la Umoja’.

Reports indicate plans for a coalition of the pro-handshake team is in the offing and they could possibly settle for the ‘Azimio La Umoja’ as the name of the coalition.

This even as they seek to woo other political players into their bandwagon to strengthen their might in the 2022 General Election.
