Former Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero is plotting to revive his political career by vying as the next Homa Bay governor in 2022.
Speaking to the Standard, Kidero confirmed that he would vie for the seat currently held by ODM’s Cyprian Awiti.
Kidero said he had been approached by locals as one of their “son” to vie for the seat.
“It is something I am considering very seriously,” Kidero said.
Kidero’s entry will complicate issues for ODM given that a number of other Orange party diehards, including party chairman John Mbadi and Woman Representative Gladys Wanga are also eyeing the seat.
Also said to be eyeing the seat is Oyugi Magwanga, who lost in 2017 election after emerging second to Awiti.
The Standard yesterday learnt that ODM leaders, led by Wanga, are planning to hold a meeting in the county today to discuss Kidero’s entry into the race.
The former Nairobi governor’s handlers said he was building a campaign war chest to ensure he bags the seat.
Kidero did not disclose much about his plans and vision for the county or the party he would vie on, saying it was too early to do so.
A wealthy businessman, Kidero served as Nairobi governor between 2013 and 2017 before he was dethroned by Mike Sonko in the 2017 election.
Kidero’s point men have already started holding meetings in Homa Bay to strategise on his bid, saying he was the best bet to replace Awiti due to his experience, education and managerial skills.
