With less than two years remaining before the 2022 general elections, several leaders have continued to express their interest in running the country. The embattled Deputy President William Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga have been viewed as the leading horses in the race.
The President has been secretive in his plans for his replacement so far. A few weeks ago the president hinted at supporting a candidate from different ethnic communities after the Kikuyu and Kalenjin dominance in the past country’s leadership.
Speaking on Wednesday, February 10, in Nairobi while drumming support for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), the president insisted that he will ensure the person who will take over him is someone Kenyans can trust and who can unite them.
Without mentioning names, the head of state vowed not to hand over power to a thief who will oppress Kenyans.
“My aim is to ensure that those who will assume office after me will not be thieves who will oppress Kenyans, I will only leave the office to someone Kenyans can trust and who will unite them,” said Uhuru.
Although it was not clear who the head of state was referring to, he might have directed the statement to his Deputy President William Ruto has been accused of amassing a lot of wealth illegally as he builds his presidential campaign machinery. The many scandals he has been mentioned accumulatively total to billions of money.
In the same breath, the Jubilee Party leader in his speech reiterated his earlier remarks that he will not cling to the top seat and is ready to hand it over to someone else.
He insisted that his focus during his remaining time will be to deliver his pledges to Kenyans who elected him into office. “I don’t care those who move around insulting me, my focus right now is on Kenyans who elected me into office, I will make sure I fulfill my promise to them,” he added. Speaking during the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rally in Meru in February 2020, David Murathe, former Jubilee Party vice-chairman David Murathe said that once the new political dispensation envisaged in the BBI report comes into force, Uhuru will have to rethink his stand.
“Do you want President Uhuru to leave power to a thief? That will not happen,” he said.
