Slovenian, 56, Murdered In City Robbery As He Waited For His Girlfriend To Finish

A Slovenian national was Tuesday night shot and killed in a robbery incident along Mombasa Road in Nairobi.

Police and witnesses said Peter Virag, 56 was shot in the chest and died on the spot during a confrontation with gunmen who had attacked him.

Virag was in the company of his girlfriend and their driver when the incident happened at about midnight.

They had earlier on had good times at the Imara Mall near the scene of the crime where they enjoyed food and drinks at a club there.

According to the girlfriend and driver, they were headed to Great Wall apartments in Mlolongo where they were residing when the incident happened.

After departing the mall, they drove a few kilometres along Mombasa Road and stopped at the service lane in the Cabanas area to enable the driver to hand over the car to Virag and the girlfriend left for a short call.

The driver was to hand over the car to the deceased and leave to his house in Embakasi.

It was as he and the driver waited for the girlfriend to return to the car that two armed men emerged from the darkness and confronted Virag who was seated in the driver’s seat and demanded money and mobile phone.

He reportedly resisted and reached out his wallet and threw it to the backseat of the car as he fought off the gang who were then pointing their weapon at the victim.

The girlfriend had returned and found the robbery ongoing as the driver begged for mercy from the gang.

One of the gunmen pulled the trigger and fatally injured Virag in the chest before they reached out his mobile phone, Sh86,000 that was in his wallet and the mobile phones for both the woman and driver.

They also grabbed a wallet belonging to the woman before they fled the scene.

Distraught, the driver and the woman tried to administer first aid on the deceased in vain. Police said they were alerted by a truck driver who saw the incident.

The officers who visited the scene said they recovered an empty magazine of a pistol. No arrest has been made so far.

A team of detectives visited the scene Wednesday as part of efforts to trace the gang behind the robbery and murder.
