Televangelist James Ng’ang’a’s Neno Evangelism Centre has been ordered to pay a former worker Sh304,000 for sacking him illegally three years ago.

The court also ordered the church to refund Sh3,200 deducted from Mr Christopher Kinama Mutunga, but never remitted to National Social Security Fund.

Mr Mutunga worked as a parking attendant and was in charge of a canteen at the church situated at the junction of Haile Selassie Avenue and Uhuru Highway in Nairobi.

“In the instant case, the Respondent did not file a witness statement and as such the allegations of the claimant remain uncontroverted.

The Respondent did not inform the claimant of the intention to terminate the contract nor did it give the claimant a chance to defend himself.

Accordingly, I find that the termination was unfair and unlawful,” Justice Maureen Onyango ruled.

Mr Mutunga said he was employed by the church since 2007 until February 2017 when he was unfairly sacked.

He said his starting gross pay of was Sh8,000 and increased to Sh15,000 per month by the time he was fired.

He submitted that he was neither given the reasons for his termination nor accorded an opportunity to respond to any allegation against him.
