No evidence Kenyattas stole state assets, Pandora Papers show

Despite the revelation that the Kenyatta family has billions stashed in offshore firms, the Pandora Papers show no evidence that the wealth is from state assets.

This is according to a report by the BBC on the latest investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), Finance UncoveredFinance UncoveredAfrica Uncensored and other news organisations.

“The Pandora Papers, however, show no evidence that the Kenyatta family stole or hid state assets in their offshore companies,” the BBC reported on its website.

There have been varied reactions since the Pandora Papers were released on Sunday evening with some accusing Uhuru of abusing his position.

However, the ICIJ has indicated that the documents retrieved through the investigation show that the wealth was accumulated before he became president.

“A search of public records in BVI and Panama found that most of the companies linked to the Kenyattas are now dormant, some of them as a result of non-payment of regulatory fees,” the BBC report states.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family has been linked to the freshly released declassificationthat has exposed how the rich and mighty have stashed billions of shillings in offshore accounts.

Uhuru and six members of his family secretly owned a network of offshore companies, according to records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and shared with more than 600 reporters and media organizations around the world.

They have been linked to 11 firms – one of which was valued as holding assets of US$30 million (Sh3.31 billion).

Other world leaders named in the Pandora Papers include the King of Jordan Abdullah II, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Gabon’s President Ali Bongo Ondimba and President of Congo-Brazzaville Denis Sassou-Nguesso.
