Management of Kibugi mortuary in Kirinyaga speaks over alleged release of 67 bodies from the morgue

The management of Kibugi Mortuary in Kutus, Kirinyaga county has dismissed as mere romour, social media reports that 67 bodies have been released to relatives for burial today.

According to the mogue’s manager James Gatithi, only 18 bodies have been collected from that facility today.

Addressing the press outside the facility, he said that the morgue has a capacity of 32 bodies in a given time and therefore would have been impossible to hold around 67 bodies.

“There were some people spreading propaganda that so far 67 bodies have been collected for funeral services in various parts of Kirinyaga, that is total nonsense to me. We do not have such a capacity,” he said

He noted that large number of people present at the facility’s compound may have triggered the romour.

“Relatives had turned out in large numbers to collect their kins’ bodies, which is normal but there are people who took that as an advantage to spread false information,” he said.

James has also said that the number of bodies received by the morgue has not been affected by Covid 19 cases.

“I cannot say that Covid 19 has affected us that much compared to the pre-covid 19 days,” he said

James Mwendia, a coffin seller outside the facility said that they have been selling large numbers of coffins recently..

He was however quick to note that the more people witnessed does not signify a higher number of bodies being collected from the facility.

“Most of the people within Kirinyaga are buying coffins, therefore it is normal maybe once in a month to witness a lot of people here,” he said.
