Four police officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations – Lang’ata, have been arrested after allegedly robbing a man KSh40,000 and an additional US$2,400.
Antony Muvaka, Tom Omondi, Stephen Wambua and Kennedy Omondi were arrested by Serious Crimes detectives after their victim made a report at DCI headquarters.
“They abducted a man at NextGen Mall on February 6, 2022, at around noon and forcefully demanded money from him,” says DCI in a statement. “The man who had requested for a taxi by the roadside along Mombasa Road, was accosted by the officers before being forcefully bundled in a waiting Subaru, that had five occupants.”
Rogue DCI Officers Transfer Money
In the vehicle, Corporal Tom Otieno who was in-charge, forcefully transferred KSh40,000 from the victim’s M-Pesa account to his M-Pesa account.
The rogue cops then proceeded to the victim’s apartment where they took a further US$2,400 (about KSh270,000), before dumping him at Choma Zone, Total petrol station, along Mombasa Road. The ordeal lasted two hours.
“The following day, the victim went to Akira Police station to make his report, only to find the vehicle he had been bundled into parked at the station,” adds DCI. “He immediately rushed to our headquarters where he reported his discovery at the Serious Crimes unit.”
Subaru Belonged To DCI Lang’ata
Investigations established that the vehicle belonged to DCI Lang’ata. The victim positively identified the rogue cops in an identification parade conducted on Friday evening at the DCI headquarters, Kiambu Road.
“The suspects are currently guests of the state, facing Robbery with Violence charges, contrary to Section 296 (2) of the Penal Code,” says DCI, condemning the incident.
“Their actions are isolated indiscipline cases that do not represent our moral values and what we stand for. We are an investigative body that is responsive to the security needs and requirements of every Kenyan and such acts do not in any way define who we are.”
DCI has cautioned rogue cops that stern action will be taken against them if they break the law.
“Any Kenyan who may have unfortunately suffered in the hands of the four, is urged to immediately report at the Serious Crimes Unit headquarters for action,” adds DCI.
