Cartels at Petroleum Ministry responsible for high cost of fuel, DP Ruto says

Deputy President William Ruto now claims that cartels in the Petroleum Ministry are responsible for the high cost of fuel in the country.

According to Ruto, unscrupulous petrol businessmen were using the ministry to manipulate the prices of the essential commodity to boost their profits.

“By protecting the cartels and aiding a few companies to make super-profits, the state Department of Petroleum is hurting Kenyans,” he said.

Speaking at his Karen Residence as he met grassroots leaders from Kigumo Constituency in Murang’a County, Ruto wondered why the cost of petrol in Kenya was higher than in Uganda, a landlocked country that relies on Kenya for its petroleum imports.

Ruto has also alleged that some of the private companies were allocated Sh12 per litre, leading to punitive fuel costs.

“Decisions amongst them to ‘gift’ Sh12/litre to private companies causing the punitive fuel costs while cartels rake in super profits must be reversed asap and all corrupt public officials involved and benefiting be prosecuted. Price controls must be removed for Competition to lower prices,” Ruto tweeted.

Ruto has asked the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining to crush the corruption cartels responsible for the high cost of fuel.

Additionally, he has called for the liberalisation of the petroleum market to cushion Kenyans from greedy businessmen.

Meanwhile, Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority is set to review this month’s prices, which is expected to come out on Thursday this week.

Following the increase, super petrol, diesel, and kerosene went up to Sh134.72, Sh115.60, and Sh110.82 per litre respectively, in Nairobi.
