The Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti was on Monday summoned to appear before the Kerugoya High Court for disobeying a legal order.
Justice Janet Mulwa has ordered Kinoti to appear in court on November, 24 without fail.
The summons followed an application filed by Kirinyaga businessman Patrick Njiru, who sought to have Kinoti jailed for six months for contempt of court.
In the application, Mr Njiru, through his lawyer Brian Khaemba, said Kinoti has disobeyed the order to release the businessman’s lorries and sugar packaging machines worth Sh46 million which had been impounded by the government.
The order to release the impounded goods was issued on May 2, 2020.
Kinoti impounded 1260 bags of suspected illegal sugar at Pareah stores at Ruiru bypass in Kiambu county in June 2018. He had asked the businessman to use his two vehicles to transport the sugar.
Kinoti’s lawyer had told the court that the DCI was keeping the impounded vehicles and machines as exhibits.
In June 2018, Njiru and his wife, Leah Njiru, obtained court orders barring police from arresting them.
