Activist Trailed, Sprayed With Bullets And Now Living In Fear

A Mombasa-based human rights activist who was shot twice by unknown people four days ago now claims his life is in danger.

Sadat Salim and his brother were seriously injured while a businessman died on the spot when they were sprayed with bullets by two armed men at Memon area in Mombasa County last Thursday.

Sadat and his brother are presently still in hospital and are yet to record a statement four days after the incident.

The brothers say the incident that took place on Thursday at 3pm is not related to the insecurity cases reported in the area.

They attribute the gun drama to activism on matters corruption and economic development, saying some people had been trailing them and taking pictures before the incident.

“Baadhi ya namba nazijua, kuna mtu anakuja anasimamisha gari ananiangalia…for almost 45 seconds to a minute, amesimamisha magari nyuma yake ananiangalia tu, ananichunguza….anatoa camera yake ananirekodi,” said Sadat.

“Yale maganda ya risasi ambayo polisi waliyachukua mpaka sasa wamenyamaza, hawajazungumza lolote…hakuna polisi amekuja hapa kumhoji na kutaka kujua masuala ya uchunguzi,” stated Karama Yahya, another human rights activist.

Sadat was shot in his left arm and stomach and cannot walk for now. He has undergone three operations in 4 days and claims unknown people are camping at their home.

“Nilipoletwa hospitali hapa, kuna watu naskia wanapita pale na guns AK47 wanaulizia nyumbani kwetu…hao watu sijui na watu gani,” he said.

“Twawindwa sana na hawa mafisadi na jambo la kwanza wamefanya ni kumtarget ndugu yetu comrade Sadat ili kutunyamazisha,” stated activist Mesh Abdul.

Mombasa police are yet to open up on whether the matter is being dealt with. The family says no statement has been recorded so far with their efforts to report the matter at Tononoka and Urban police stations failing to bear fruit.
