Incarcerated former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is a bitter man after nearly all his friends deserted him at the hour of need, among them State House operatives.

Sonko’s real friends are lamenting that all the Kikuyus he gave lucrative businesses while at the helm at City Hall have abandoned him. The only man said to be engaged in shadow diplomacy to have Sonko released is Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.While a state guest, Kenya Power disconnected power in his Mua home over arrears raising further questions.The former governor shocked many when he openly cried during the mention of a corruption case against him before Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti’s court.

Kenyans are questioning why high flying lawyers who surrounded Sonko among them George Kithi and Harrison Kinyanjui abandoned him fearing if they continued to represent him, they would be harassed by the state agencies and lose lucrative legal tenders they are engaged with government agencies. They have withdrawn legal services they offered to Sonko after City Hall involved Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission to probe their legal fee pending payments.

The former governor is now being represented by the aged John Khaminwa, Assa Nyakundi and Wilfred Nyamu – faces that never won City Hall legal services tenders. Last week, police blocked Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen together with journalists from getting into the court premises where Sonko’s hearing was taking place. Murkomen, however, managed to enter the court premises after some negotiations and a security check at the entrance.

Insiders revealed that Sonko friends do not want to associate with him after he adversely mentioned Uhuru Kenyatta’s sister, Christine Pratt, in a case over the appointment of the Nairobi deputy governor. To make matters worse, Sonko also sensationally claimed he with Interior cabinet secretary Karanja Kibicho masterminded the 2017 mayhem that rocked the city in a bid to taint the ODM party and Raila Odinga as violent. Those who have blocked Sonko’s mobile phone number include East African Legislative Assembly MP Simon Mbugua and former Uhuru personal assistant Jomo Gecaga.

By last week, word had it that another Sonko business associate, Antony Otieno Ombok Allias Jamal whom together they are facing criminal charges is said to be bargaining to become state witness. At one time while handling the case, Sonko lawyers Miller and Kithi wanted chief magistrate Douglas Ogoti to recuse himself from the case. It is alleged that in January last year, Sonko abused his office by improperly conferring a benefit to himself by demanding Sh10 million from Web Tribe Ltd through ROG Security Limited.

The money was an inducement to facilitate payments to Web Tribe Limited by Nairobi city county government. Sonko, ROG Security Limited’s director is Ombok alias Jamal have denied conspiring to commit an offence of corruption. ROG Security Limited and Jamal are represented by lawyer Danstan Omari. Also deserting Sonko are MCAs he ferried to Mombasa during his impeachment. Notable pro-Sonko MCAs are Ann Thumbi, Silvia Museiya and Millicent Jagero. Others are Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obuya, Mark Ndungu, Waithera Chege, Mutheu Musyimi, Mary Njambi among others. Njambi is a well-known drunk who strips naked in bars and dances shamelessly after having imbibed more than enough.
