Soko Maize Flour Lied About Ingredients, Watchdog Establishes

Manufacturers of Soko maize flour are on the spot over publishing inaccurate information about their product on the label.

According to Consumer Authority of Kenya (CAK), Capwell industries were found guilty of violating what it termed as consumer information standards and labelling requirements.

CAK said the miller contravened section 55(a)(i) of the Competition Act which touches on violation of standard, quality, value, grade and composition of the product.

The maize flour manufacturers who have since entered into a settlement agreement with the consumer oversight authority were fined Ksh600,000.

CAK flagged the maize floor brand following an investigation into major retail stores on fortification and labelling claims millers made in the financial year ended June 2020.

“This was a labelling issue based on the 2010 nutritional table as opposed to the revised one of 2016,” Capwell Industries chief executive Rajan Shah said

He added that the composition of the product still met the nutritional requirements.

However, CAK director-general Wango’mbe Kariuki said that the miller was ready to comply with the provisions of the act.
