William Ruto’s point man in Migori and a senior police officer in the county have furiously reacted to accusations linking them to ethanol smuggling and trafficking ring at the Kenya-Tanzania border.
The reported dealings of Kuria West MP Mathias Robi is a cause for concern and police insiders claim that he is having a field day in the illegal trade due to coverups allegedly facilitated by Migori county police commander Celestino Nyaga.
Robi who is a staunch critic of ODM leader Raila Odinga was quick to attribute such allegations to his political opponents who are looking for his downfall while on the other hand, Nyaga believed someone was out to maliciously tarnish his name. “For the first time, I’m getting it from you. I have no doubt you have been bribed to do so, anyway, proceed with your master’s demand,” the officer said in a text message.
Those in the know noted the MP is involved in large scale illegal importation of ethanol and would always drop the names of senior police officers while threatening junior police officers who hesitate to do things his way.
Inside sources noted that the existing bad blood between the county police commander and a section of junior officers who are keen to dismantle the perceived deadly business was the key factor in the animosity. Ordinarily, most players in the ‘dark business’ are said to be using cargo containers loaded with cereals meant for the Kenyan market to conceal illegal ethanol and avoid paying taxes.
It has also emerged that the dealers, in cahoots with some border staff, take advantage of the porous Kenya-Tanzania border at Isebania and Namanga to bring in cheap ethanol, thereby denying the Kenya Revenue Authority millions of shillings in unpaid taxes.
