Politicians Are Behind Rising Crimes In Kilimani, Police Spokesman Reveals

Police Spokesman Charles Owino on Sunday, August 30, denied claims of politicians using businessmen to fuel crime in Kilimani, Nairobi.

The leafy suburb in Nairobi has witnessed an increase of crime cases with two people being murdered in the span of a one month.

Owino denied claims of businessmen in the area being used as proxies by politicians to engage in fake gold scams and money laundering.

“I do not think politicians have anything to do with the activities that we see in Kilimani save for situations where there could be impunity in terms of planning and management between these places.

“As police, we do not experience that directly but as residents, I’m sure maybe that could be a point of concern. I do not think politicians are involved whether it is people dealing with wash wash business, gold nuggets and so on,” he explained.

Owino, however, highlighted a case in which a Member of Parliament was involved in a shooting in a night club around the area but added that the cases are of acquittances who know each other.

The police spokesman also explained that most crime cases in Kilimani involve people who are licensed firearms holders.

“What we have seen in Kilimani area are kind of white-collar crimes where people are dealing with gold and large sums of money.

“The area is also occupied by middle-class people with a large number of clubs definitely we will have to get a few white-collar crimes,” he noted.

Kevin Omwenga was on Friday, August 21 shot dead inside his bedroom in unclear circumstances in Kilimani area, after an argument between him and the key suspect in his murder.

A woman later identified as Sheila Njeri Murage was on Saturday, July 18, discovered in a flower bed at Santonia Court in the upmarket Kilimani in Nairobi.
