The National Assembly Committee on Health on Wednesday submitted a report to the House on its findings of the company that sold an electric blanket mat to Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
This is after the MP sustained third-degree burns on his feet after using the mat.
Kuria said he acquired the electric blanket mat through a Murang’a MCA friend as a solution to what he said was numbness in his feet.
According to the report tabled by the committee chair, Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, the company Toto Ceragem Limited had not been cleared by Pharmacy and Poisons Board to operate as per the law in the country
“Toto Ceragem Africa Limited was to cease distribution and operation with immediate effect and any unsold items were to be quarantined on-site and all the outlets of Toto Ceragem Africa Limited to be closed until licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.”
She said that after conducting the investigation, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board found out that the firm had been registered by the Registrar of Companies, but the board had not registered the products of the firm.
“The Ceragem products were not registered by Pharmacy and Poisons Board. The products were imported without an import permit by Pharmacy and Poisons Board,” Chege said.
The MP added that the firm did not train its staff on the use of the Ceragem Thermo Therapeutic mat including other devices.
“Ceragem healthcare consultation card was a tool used to capture new clients information and clients’ record for consequence visit.”
The company-Ceragem Limited is also operating in the country as a healthcare provider without Pharmacy and Poisons Board approval as required by the law.
Chege added that by the time the investigation was conducted; only three pieces of Ceragem Thermo mat were remaining in the stock from a total of 30 units that were imported in May 2019.
The committee also revealed that the firm had not set procedures for complaints from clients or returned products.
He also demanded to know why the company which was banned in Texas for making claims that it can cure cancer is being allowed to operate freely in the country.
Kuria had to fly to India for further treatment on his feet. He came back last month after recovering.
The MP had also written to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to probe the criminal elements in the company dealings.
The company which has been in operations for 14 years in the country has shops in Nairobi, Thika, Mombasa, Eldoret, Murang’a, Eastleigh and Garissa.
