Let me beat you a very short story.
There is a company called Inform Lykos that was given a tender to supply ballot papers during Nigeria’s 2019 elections. They were paid, provided with everything that was needed and the country went ahead to prepare for the elections as per the schedule.
Then guess what, apparently the company delayed the ballot papers, only to deliver them on the morning of elections. Can you imagine that sort of madness?! This delay caused logistical and a operations nightmare, to an extent that Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had to postpone the elections by a week; from Feb 16 to Feb 23, 2019.
Now, our good old IEBC led by Chebukati, without doing due diligence and ignoring all the red flags went ahead and awarded Inform Lykos the tender to supply ballot papers, register of voters among other items for our next year’s elections. Luckily, the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (PPARB) nullified the tender after it established that the commission had bungled the procurement process, and directed a restart of the process at the financial evaluation stage. All in all, how IEBC is conducting itself on such critical matters that can have grave repercussions on the elections process is an issue of great concern. We can’t afford to be this reckless because of political and apparent ‘chicken’ reasons.
