Embu ward representatives are concerned with the way funds set aside to combat corona virus pandemic are being used. Minority leader Masters Mwaniki has revealed that out of a budget of Sh11 million, the county health docket was planning to use a whopping Sh9 million on allowances, lunches, bottled drinking water and airtime with a balance of Sh2 million set to fight against Covid-19.
The health department was planning to use Sh1.5 million weekly on screening activities and emergency response. This include Sh1.2 million on lunch, Sh176,000 for airtime and Sh85,000 in allowances for the teams involved in the activities every week. In a report tabled by Ruguru-Ngandori MCA Muturi Mwombo who chairs the health committee, the department intended to spend a further Sh2 million for allowances for Covid-19 awareness creation facilitators, Sh700,000 for their airtime, Sh450,000 on fuel plus an extra Sh75,000 on printing papers and cartridges.
Eyebrows have been raised over County’s move to distribute 50,000 personal protective equipment. Kyeni South MCA Salesio Kimaru wants proper planning as opposed to millions of shillings being budgeted. Makima MCA Phillip Nzangi is worried those in charge of the funds want to loot.
Health committee chairman Muturi Mwombo, the RuguruNgandori ward MCA has sworn not to allow misuse of the millions of shillings. This is happening as Evurore MCA, Duncan Mbui, challenged his colleagues to avoid hero worshipping the governor Martin Wambora, county executive committee members and chief officers by defending their corrupt tendencies. He blames Mwombo who chairs the county assembly health committee for dinning and wining with the executive and for being compromised to the detriment of the citizens.
