The Central Management Committee (CMC) of Afya Sacco has carried out a massive purge targeting top managers in the giant society. The purge has seen the once powerful Operations and Banking manager Maurice Mutuku moved from the docket to the obscure Investments department.
Mr Mutuku held immense power there; he had access to billions of shillings. He was the blue-eyed boy under the ousted immediate former Chief Executive Officer Felix Ndoi.
Mr Mutuku is said to have also been involved in multi-million shillings corruption scandals in which Afya Sacco allegedly lost hundreds of millions of shillings. During the earlier purge conducted by the former chairman, the late Vitalis Lukiri, top managers including the then Deputy Chief Executive Officer Livingstone Sakwa and Mr Mutuku were punished, it is said they were targeted because of having been the chief architects of the looting cartel.
Emerging reports from within the Sacco told The Weekly Vision investigations team that the new chairman Beatrice Mogire together with her Deputy H.K. Kosgei instituted a fresh purge targeting mainly Kamba managers to consolidate their stranglehold on the multi-billion shillings society. Ms Mogire also chairs the Central Management Committee (CMC). “When the late Chairman Lukiri tried to institute a purge meant to clean up the corrupt cartel from the Sacco, they fought back. Mr Mutuku then the right-hand man of CEO Ndoi resisted the move.
In a cosmetic move, the then CEO only ‘demoted’ him and transferred him to one of the Sacco branches up-country. But all hell broke loose soon after,” said one of the insiders. Mr Ndoi moved fast using an outdated contempt of court ruling against previous top CMC, to hoodwink Agriculture Secretary Peter Munya.
The ruling was used to kick Mr Lukiri and his Deputy Simon Kariuki out of office. The move saved Mr Mutuku and other corruption cartels in the society who had been affected. Soon after Mr Ndoi cancelled the demotions and the transfers as he entrenched his position as a de-facto Afya Sacco CEO just like Mogire is doing now.
Ms Mogire and Kosgei soon after they assumed office got rid of the former CEO Ndoi and sacked a string of Kamba employees who had been elevated by Mr Ndoi. The current CEO Peter Gisemba is from Kisii region just like Ms Mogire. Mogire’s ruthless purge has seen the demotion of another Ndoi right-hand man, former Public and Customer Relations Manager Alfred Munyao who has been demoted the post to an obscure position within the Sacco.
