Kemikal legit: Mzungu in viral wash wash comedy video opens up on how he landed the role

Darren Collins, the American national featured in the viral ‘wash wash’ comedy video of comedian Terrence Creative has opened up about his life in Kenya and how he landed the role.

Speaking in an interview published on a YouTube channel, Collins said he first came to Kenya 10 years ago and that he has been living here for the past six years.

“In 2012, I came to Kenya for a research project on HIV and AIDS prevention education by using storytelling,” Collins said, revealing that he visited hospitals and spoke to persons living with AIDS during his first visit.

After conducting his research project, Collins said he was invited by the Nairobi Rotary club and decided to stay in Kenya upon which he met with comedians Fred Omondi and Terrance Creative.

“I landed the role in the wash wash, kemikal video because I am a white guy who was around,” Collins divulged before adding that he had also worked with Terrance before and that the two have a close working relationship.

“Back in 2012 when I was doing my research here I started doing comedy with Terrence and Fred just to earn some extra money for my research project. Terrance decided that I was the right person for the role,” Collins said.

The American further stated that when Terrance gives him a call on a project, all he does is accept knowing that the skit will do well.

“When he calls I just say yes because I know it’s going to be fun,” he said.

Collins further revealed that he enjoys his time in Kenya adding that the people always refer to him as mzungu, mlami and recently as wash wash.

“My body feels good in Nairobi. The temperature, the elevation, Kenya is treating me well,” he said.
